Applet 1

Ion exchange in a homogeneous system. Complexes are relatively strong

Applet provides an example of ion exchange reactions in solutions.

Solutions of Zn(CN)2 and Hg(NO3)2 are mixed together. So far as cyanide complexes of mercury are much stronger than cyanide complexes of zinc, exchange of ions takes place. Complexes accommodate Hg2+ releasing Zn2+.
