Ion exchange in a homogeneous system. Complexes are relatively weak

Applet provides an example of ion exchange reactions in solutions.

The solution contains ions of zinc, manganese, nitrate, and acetate (R −). The acetate forms complexes with both metal ions. So far as these complexes are relatively weak, reversible exchange of ions takes place. Mechanism of such exchange can be considered as step-wise association and dissociation of the complexes.
