Ion exchange on surface of a dense polymer

The system consists of two phases: solution of two metal ions and dense polymer. The polymer bears functional groups R.

So far as the polymer is dense and not permeable for the ions, the exchange takes place only on surface of the solid phase. Functional groups located inside bulk of the polymer are not available for the exchange.

For simplicity, charge-compensating anions present in the liquid phase are not shown.
